Eye Surgery for Improved Vision
Laser surgery to correct poor eyesight is more popular than ever. The most common eye surgery procedure of this type is called Lasik. It is likely your eye doctor offers Lasik or can refer you to a surgeon who does. When choosing an eye surgeon for any kind of corrective surgery credentials are extremely important. You can find a surgeon through the American Academy of Ophthalmology by visiting their website and searching for a refractive surgery specialist. Also it is recommended the surgeon you choose is affiliated with the American College of Surgeons, an organization with stringent requirements for members.
One thing many people don't know is that there are different kinds of Lasik. For example, traditional Lasik uses a laser or blade to cut a flap in the cornea, which is the clear film over the eye. From there the shape of the cornea is altered using a laser that works on the middle layer. The cornea is then replaced and the procedure is completed. There is also custom Lasik, also called wavefront Lasik. This type of surgery uses 3D measuring technology for the most precise correction possible. There are various other types of Lasik including those made for thin corneal film and those which do not use a blade for flap cutting.
You might also want to look into PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy. This procedure has been around longer than Lasik and is also a refractive surgical procedure for the correction of vision. Although invented in the 80s, PRK did not receive approval from the FDA until 1995 in the U.S. This procedure uses an excimer laser to ablate microscopic pieces of corneal tissue in order to reshape the cornea for vision correction. The same laser used for PRK can also be used to remedy astigmatism by smoothing the cornea. Your eye surgeon can help you decide between Lasik and PRK based on your evaluation.
Speaking of an evaluation, it is important to undergo a thorough eye exam before considering any kind of eye surgery. In addition to an exam you will need to consult at length with the surgeon you choose for pre and post op instructions. For example if you are a contact lens wearer you will have to stop wearing your lenses for a minimum of two weeks prior to the procedure. Educating yourself on laser eye surgery for the correction of vision is extremely important before you decide upon this course of action.
