PRK Lasik and Other Types of Laser Eye Surgery

Although many people confuse PRK and Lasik for the same thing they are actually two different types of laser eye procedures. PRK is an abbreviation for photorefractive keratectomy and was once the most commonly performed vision correction surgery. Invented in the 1980s and used extensively in Europe and Canada, PRK gained FDA approval in the United States in 1995. This procedure can be used for both near and farsightedness and even astigmatism. It uses a beam of ultraviolet laser light to ablate miniscule cornea bits and reshape the cornea for correction. The cornea is the clear, thin film that covers the eye.

Astigmatism Lasik procedures can also be performed by qualified surgeons. Lasik is not just one type of laser procedure; there are actually several types of Lasik. For example you may want to consider the procedure known as Epi Lasik. This procedure is for those with low myopia who are not good candidates for regular Lasik. Wavefront Lasik, also known as custom Lasik, is another type of laser surgery that uses sophisticated 3D imaging technology for extremely precise results. The right procedure for you depends not only on your personal preferences but the shape of your cornea and what the surgeon thinks is best for you.

Before you undergo PRK, Lasik or any other kind of eye surgery consult with your eye doctor. Also when looking for a surgeon make sure they have successfully performed a high number of procedures and have the proper credentials. Although any kind of laser eye surgery can be costly there are ways to make the cost more manageable. Consider financing the procedure if you cannot pay the entire cost at once. When researching prices don't choose a surgeon just because he or she offers bargain prices -- experience and reputation is far more important than how much a surgeon charges.
