What Can You Do After Lasik Eye Surgery to Ensure Its Success

Although Lasik eye surgery has a really short recovery period compared to other surgical vision correction, the full success of your surgery depends on you. It’s not uncommon for a successful surgery to go wrong after the patient goes home if they forgot to protect their eyes from external forces. It takes some will power to resist doing the stuff that you’re so used to do but can’t because your eyes need to heal.

Here are some things you can do after your laser surgery to ensure its success.

1. Wear the protective goggles your doctor’s office will give you upon going home. You’re instructed to wear them as much as you can especially when you go to sleep. This is to ensure that you do not unknowingly rub your eyes while you’re half asleep.

2. Keep your eyes well hydrated. Your doctor will give you artificial tears without preservatives. You should be diligent about applying them according to doctor’s orders. Your eyes could dry after surgery which may impede on the healing. And, dry eyes can aggravate the itching you feel so apply that drops.

3. Get some shut eyes. It’s important for you to close your eyes for two to four hours right when you get home from surgery. This allows the flaps to adhere in place tightly. That means no computers, TV, books, or what have you. Think of it as your “do-nothing-day” if you will. However you see it, get some shut eyes.

4. Follow your doctors orders. Your doctor will give you antibiotics and steroid drops to prevent infection and inflammation, follow up on that. Apply them regularly to prevent any possible complications after your eye surgery.

5. Don’t hesitate to give your doctor a call. If you think the symptoms or the pain is becoming unusual, don’t hesitate to give your doctor a call. Although the risks are low, there’s some chance of post-op complications. You do not want to take chances when it comes to your vision so call your doctor if there’s nothing you don’t understand after your surgery.

When it comes to eye surgery, Lasik vision correction is considered very safe by some eye doctors. But like any other procedure, the patient still determines the outcome so make sure you know everything you needed to do after your surgery.
